Mission is to be a scientific research institution socially responsible for holistic solutions to the issues of the Lithuanian rural economy and policy development, oriented towards national state interests and needs of business and non-governmental organisations, to learn about the country-side and its processes on scientific and practical levels.
Vision is an institute of national scientific research, partner of business and non-governmental organisations, uniting experts of various fields of science and directing their knowledge towards the research of the Lithuanian agrarian economy and rural development. At the same time it is one of the leaders of the agrarian economy science capable of creating scientific products recognized all over the world and thus universally integrating in the international market of the science of economics.
Scientific activities of the Lithuanian Institute of Agrarian Economics:
1. Lithuanian economy and policy of agricultural and food industry as well as fishery of Lithuania.
2. Lithuanian economy of farms and other rural business subjects in the country-side and of the enterprises related to agricultural and fishery products.
3. Lithuanian rural development and regional policy.
4. Lithuanian economy of environmental protection and natural resources.
5. Lithuanian consumer behaviour and management of food supply chains.
Field of activities of the Institute is to implement scientific research and experimental (social) development in the social sciences field of agricultural, food and fishery economy and rural development in Lithuania.
Agricultural Policy and Foreign Trade Division
In implementing works on the experimental development of agriculture, food industry and rural development, this division (annual contracts by the Ministry of Agriculture on the implementation of works on the experimental development of agriculture, food industry and rural development):
Monitors the foreign trade in Lithuanian agricultural and food products, forecasts the trends of this trade;
Calculates the payments under the Voluntary coupled support scheme of the CAP;
Calculates the Economic Accounts for Agriculture, prepares the information to the OECD;
Models the direct payments in the EU Member States on the basis of the cost of production incurred by farms.
Division of Market Research of Agricultural Products
In implementing works on the experimental development of agriculture, food industry and rural development, this division:
Examines the price chain of agricultural and food products;
Prepares the statistical forecasts for crop and livestock production;
Monitors the situation on the dairy market;
Calculates the prices for the collection and disposal of animal by products;
Examines the consumer attitudes towards Lithuanian livestock products, estimates the market shares of these products on the domestic market;
Evaluates the potential of biogas production and the opportunities to use biogas.
In implementing the long-term institutional programme ‘The development of sustainable agriculture in Lithuania in 2017–2021’, this division:
Assessesthe functioning of the supply chain of agricultural and food products.
Rural Development Division
In implementing works on the experimental development of agriculture, food industry and rural development, this division:
Monitors the protection of national heritage products, the market share of these products, the development of handicrafts;
Models the management and funding of land reclamation facilities and restructuring of legal relationships;
Models the opportunities of development of cooperation, as well as the evolution of agriculture.
In implementing the programme ‘The evolution of Lithuanian rural areas in a knowledge society in 2017–2021’, this division:
Analyses the synergies between the objectives and actions of main Lithuanian rural development initiators;
Examines the possibilities of economic servitude in Lithuanian rural regions.
Division of Farms and Enterprises Economics
In implementing works on the experimental development of agriculture, food industry and rural development, this division:
Estimates the standards of the income of agricultural activities, assessed on the basis of relative costs;
Forecasts the main indicators of agricultural sector by 2020;
Calculates the standard prices for biological assets, agricultural products and products stored in the licensed warehouses;
Carries out the technological and economic research of the works in crop production;
Revises the prices for the breeding works and services.
In implementing the long-term institutional programme ‘The development of sustainable agriculture in Lithuania in 2017–2021’, this division:
Analyses the sustainability challenges in Lithuanian agricultural sector;
Identifies the areas of bio-economy in Lithuania and evaluates their significance and potential.
Division of Farms Business Survey
In implementing the measure ensuring the operation of Farm accountancy data network under the programme promoting development of agriculture, food industry and rural development by the Ministry of Agriculture, this division:
According to the data of Lithuanian Farm Structure Survey, estimates the typologies of farms, prepares the plans for the selection of farms.
Calculates the standard output;
Examines the FADN data reports and provides the data to the EC, manages the database;
Summarizes the results in the publication ‘FADN survey results’.
