General information

The purpose of doctoral (PhD) studies in economics is to train researchers who are able to carry out independent research and solve scientific problems.

PhD studies in economics are carried out according to the authorisation to conduct doctoral studies granted for the Lithuanian Centre for Social Sciences (LCSS) together with Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VILNIUS TECH) by Order No V-160 of the Minister for Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Lithuania of 22 February 2019 (and Order No 75 of 18 January 2021).

Four-year studies

PhD studies in the field of economics are four-year full-time studies open to applicants holding a Master’s degree or a diploma confirming a qualification corresponding to a Master’s degree.

The study programme includes subjects designed to develop knowledge of the topic of the dissertation and generic competences, the writing of the dissertation, and other activities such as the scientific internship, presentation of scientific results in scholarly publications, at international and national scientific events, and the defence of the dissertation.

Writing a dissertation is one of the main stages of doctoral studies, during which a doctoral student, guided by his/her supervisor, carries out a unique, independent research project.

External dissertation defence

If you have prepared your dissertation independently and have fulfilled other formal requirements for doctoral studies, you may defend your dissertation externally. For information about the possibility to defend dissertation externally, please contact the LCSS Scientific Secretary at: moksline.sekretore@lcss.lt.

Doctoral scholarship and social guarantees

PhD students studying in state-funded places receive a PhD scholarship for all four years of their studies and acquire the status of a student.

The student status entitles them to student discounts, e.g. on public transport, as well as compulsory health insurance covered by the state.

Foreign nationals with a temporary residence permit should consider private health insurance as they are not covered by the state.
