Lithuanian institute of agrarian economics is a lead partner of project „Ecovillages for sustainable rural development“, which was started to implement in 2010, together with 4 other partners from EU (Latvia, Poland, Finland, Sweden) and Belarus as well.
The aim of this project is to develop more sustainable ways of living in the rural areas of the Baltic sea region. Sustainability as understood by the project partners includes physical, environmental, economic, social and cultural aspects.
It is expected that project will help our society to get closer to nature again and to develop new ways of living together on the land in a genuinely more sustainable way. This is especially important given the climate crisis and resource shortages that we face.
The aim will be achieved by development a toolkit of ecovillage framework for technologies and practices, creation a toolkit of social framework of ecovillages and composition of Baltic sea region ecovillage road map for tourists. Project results will include recommendations for policy-makers, guidelines for initiators and developers of ecovillages.
All project „Ecovillages for sustainable rural development“ actitivties will be implemented by the end of 2013.

2011-10-03 Lithuanian Institute of Agrarian Economics participated in the 3rd project partners meeting in Sweden
2011-10-27 “Ecovillages” project participated in Baltic Development Forum’s Summit project village in Gdansk. Representatives of Lithuanian Institute of Agrarian Economics (LIAE) have participated in the 13th Baltic Development Forum Summit and European Commission’s 2nd Annual Forum on the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region.
During summit EU flagship projects‘ village was organized, where LIAE, under the umbrella of CBSS – holder of Baltic lighthouse projects 21, presented project „Ecovillages for sustainable rural development“ (Ecovillages). Representatives of “Ecovillage” indivually communicated with each person interested in the project. Informational materials were available as well.
“Ecovillages” project contributes to the EU strategy for the sustainable development. Project aims at fostering ecovillages development in the Baltic Sea Region. It is expected that project will help our society to get closer to nature again and to develop new ways of living together on the land in a genuinely more sustainable way. This is especially important given climate change, environmental pollution, resource shortages and social problems people face nowadays.
Summit was organized on the 24 – 26th of October, 2011, Gdansk, Poland. During summit new ambitions and priorities for the Baltic Sea Region were discussed. More than 500 politicians, decision makers, national authorities, scientists, business representatives from different region‘s countries attended the event.
