The EKVI “Living Lab” Concept Comes to Life

The year 2025 marks a new stage in the research and experimental development ecosystem at the Institute of Economics and Rural Development of the Lithuanian Centre for Social Sciences (LCSS). The Innovation Transfer Centre has officially launched LIRA Lab – Living Innovations for Regional Advancement, a Living Lab led by principal investigator Dr. Rita Lankauskienė.

The idea, brought back from the OpenLivingLab Days 2024—the global gathering of the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL) held in Timișoara, Romania in autumn 2024—has now materialized. This international event brings together mentors, researchers, government officials, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators from around the world. During the event, a vision emerged on how to consolidate accumulated research and experimental development knowledge and apply it to innovation transfer, ensuring that innovations developed at EKVI effectively reach end users—whether the general public or targeted stakeholder groups. The goal is to enhance the socio-economic impact of research and experimental development (R&D).

At the heart of LIRA Lab are regional ecosystems, AI-driven models, stakeholder-driven simulations, commercialization, and a wide range of open innovation processes aimed at bringing innovations to end users.
