On 19-21 April, the researchers from LCSS IERD presented the interim results of the project “Sustainable Rural Area Development via Recreational Trails (TRACKS)” at the conference “The 4th Health-Oriented Tourism & Food Conference” in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The researchers gave the presentation on “Forest Bathing: Understanding Visitor Behaviour and Expenditure Patterns” which explores how forest-based recreation contributes to both individual wellbeing and local economies. Drawing on survey data collected from visitors to two nature trails in Lithuania, the study analyses behavioral patterns, levels of satisfaction, and expenditure related to forest bathing experiences. The findings highlight key differences in visitor demographics, motivations, and spending between the two sites, revealing how trail design, accessibility, and perceived natural quality influence both the depth of engagement and economic contribution. By applying an integrated framework grounded in attention restoration theory, the experience economy, and willingness-to-pay models, the study offers valuable insights for sustainable tourism development and health-oriented landscape planning. The research underscores the growing relevance of nature-based wellness tourism in Lithuania and provides evidence-based recommendations for enhancing visitor experience while supporting local green economies.
The conference convened scholars and professionals from 25 countries. The conference featured the presentation of 95 peer-reviewed papers, fostering an in-depth exchange of knowledge on health-oriented tourism, sustainable food systems, and wellness practices. This international event provided a valuable platform for academic dialogue and collaboration on emerging trends and interdisciplinary approaches in the field.
